Jesse Tree, Day 4 – Waiting on God

Then the Lord took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!” Gen. 15:5, NLT

Read Genesis 12: 1-7

I wasn’t sure I was ever going to get married. I could hear my biological clock ticking so loudly that the thing just about kept me up at night. I had prayed about it, fasted about it–just about wore my knees asking  God to bless me with a husband and children.

Have you ever wanted something so badly, but there was pretty much very little you could do to make it happen?

Abram and Sarai, had been clinging to the thread of a promise for many years and still nothing. God told Abram to leave his father’s house and go to a land that He would show him with a promise: “I will make you into a great nation.” The only problem was that Abram and Sarai had no children.  They would have to wait on God’s timing for the fulfillment of this promise.

Have you been there–stuck in the waiting zone with God? I have. In fact I wrote a whole book about waiting on God.

Abram and Sarai were waiting for God to answer their pleas for children. But above the micro focus on their personal needs, God was shaping the arc of the line from which His own promised son would come.

Would God default on His promise?  Absolutely not!  God reaffirmed His promise to Abram again one night that his descendants would be uncountable–as numerous as the stars. Abram was about seventy-five years old when God promised that he would make him into a great nation. At the age of one hundred, he held the long awaited son, Isaac, in his arms. Though the waiting was long, God had been faithful!

Can you attest to the faithfulness of God? I can. Sixteen years of marriage to a wonderful man and two children later, I can say: He IS faithful!

What have you been waiting on God for? Friend, be encouraged today. Don’t you doubt that He will fulfill His promise to you! But here is the best part. Whether you realize it or not, the master designer is weaving your experience into a much grander story line than you can even imagine–as uncountable, and as unfathomable as the stars.

Wait for it…wait for it.

REFLECT: What have you been waiting on God for? Friend, be encouraged! Reflect with gratitude and praise for a past experience in which He answered your prayers.

Live deep; laugh much.

I help individuals create space and develop habits and strategies to live a flourishing life — one goal at a time.
